We can’t wait to help you qualify for the tax credit for windows

The rules are simple:

  • The federal tax break is for upgrading energy efficiency in an existing home, not new construction.
  • The deduction is for materials only, not labor.
  • The windows must have the ENERGY STAR® rating from the federal government.

Let’s “run the numbers”:
First, you get the one-time tax credit for windows. You deduct on your 2010 tax return up to $1500 of the cost of the new energy saving windows.

You are very likely to get all $1500 because you are allowed to deduct up to 30% of the cost of the windows themselves (not installation fees).

Then every year, you can deduct 25% to 30% of what you’re paying now for heating and cooling. (Keeping warm and staying cool accounts for nearly half of your utility bill).

30% of a typical home's heating and cooling is lost out windows. Your old windows are heating the lawn and cooling the driveway!

75% of the heat of the summer sun passes IN to your house through poorly insulated windows.

About the ENERGY STAR® requirement to get the tax credit for windows
You probably have seen those two words on stickers on all kinds of appliances nowadays. It’s the name of the Department of Energy program to encourage energy efficiency. It extends to home improvement upgrades including replacement windows; energy saving siding and roofs; or heating and air conditioning systems.

  • Our experts will guide you to the windows with the proper rating. Here is a brief explanation of the requirement:

The U value is important in the winter. To qualify for the tax credit for windows, the replacements in the St Louis area must have a “U value” of .30 or less. “U” is simply the measure of the amount of heat loss. So the lower the U value, the greater a window insulates against heat flow.

The SHGC value is important in the summer. This is how much summer sun heat a window allows “in”. Again, the magic number is .30 or less. The lower the SHGC, the greater a window insulated against solar heat.

Put it all together and you get energy savings in addition to a tax credit for windows
Tests were conducted in extreme climates: A Boston winter, and a Phoenix summer. Windows were replaced in houses built with the standard aluminum frame, single pane style.

Boston

  • Heating season savings with a low U value window: 39%
  • Heating season savings with a higher U value window: 27%

Phoenix

  • Cooling season savings from a low U value window: 32%
  • Cooling season savings from an upper U value window: 6%
