We’ve assembled some information to help pinpoint your ideal roof.

Many roofing materials are used for both home and commercial roof replacement; our expertise extends to all of them:

Asphalt Shingles are the most common type used today. They can last 20 to 30 years, and come in laminated colors and textures. Manufacturing advances have reinforced this roofing with wood fibers or fiber glass.

Metal Roofing includes steel, aluminum, and copper. While more popular on commercial roofs, homeowners are enjoying the design options which can last up to 50 years. Metal costs more than asphalt shingle, but less that slate or tile.

Wood shakes are made of cedar, pine or spruce cut by machine for a thick, rough-hewn look. Cedar is most popular. Shakes fade over time, often to a soft grey, and can last 30 years. Installation is more labor intensive.

Slate Shingles are heavier and add a distinctive look. This roof can last from 45 to 70 years. It is among the more expensive roofing materials.

Tile Roofing is made from clay, concrete or synthetic rubber. Colors and shapes abound. As with slate, it’s heavier and can last more than 50 years. An older roof may need additional support added.

We offer extensive experience with commercial roofing materials for low slope or flat roofs:

  • There are several types of membranes, which are generally rolled out then hot or cold bonded to the surface. Some are sprayed on. Membranes are generally polymers and can be white to reflect the sun and reduce air conditioning costs by as much as 50%.
  • Built up roofing (also known as BUR) uses coal tar or hot asphalt as the waterproofing between layers of roofing “felt”.
  • Modified Bitumen is a hybrid of membrane and built up materials. They are made in the factory and rolled out; offer fire safety and energy efficiency. Some are reinforced with a layer of fabric for additional strength.
  • Metal roofing materials are among the longest lasting. They have been engineered to be reflective of the heat of the sun for energy efficiency, and are often “standing seam”, which means the panels of metal interlock; the seam is slightly taller to shed rain and avoid leaks.
  • PVC is another membrane. Seams heat weld so well, this roof is sometimes referred to as “seamless”
  • TPO are typically fleece backed sheet membranes that are glued with adhesives to insulation. These products are typically white in color, and may be reinforced.

Your selection will depend on your budget, of course, but the slope of your roof can also determine the best roofing materials.

Commercial and industrial customers may perform a “life cycle” cost comparison. It balances today’s roof cost with the price of a replacement roof during the lifetime of a less durable roof.

For a homeowner future costs may not be so important, as most people change houses during the life of a roof. The shorter the time you live in your current house, the less likely the roof can “pay you back” in energy savings.
